General Tournament Rules

This tournament features a single open division: Heaviest Overall Tuna. Awards and prize money go to the top three finishers (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) based on the heaviest single tuna weighed, plus one additional award for the highest combined weight of two tuna.

Each team is limited to six (6) anglers, one (1) captain, and two (2) deckhands, for a maximum roster of nine (9) people.

Qualifying Species: Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and Bigeye Tuna

Key Rules

  1. All competitors are required to follow every applicable regulation set by California, Mexico, and NMFS.
  2. Eligible catches must be made using conventional rod and reel tackle during official fishing hours: from lines in at 5:30am Friday, August 21st through lines out at 6:00pm Saturday, August 22nd.
  3. Both live and dead bait are allowed, including chumming.
  4. Maximum rated line strength is 150 LB test.
  5. Leaders may be no longer than 30 feet.
  6. Electric reels, spears, and harpoons are not allowed for bringing fish to the boat.
  7. Every fish must be fought with the rod completely out of any fixed rod holder.
  8. Spotter planes and drones are not permitted at any time during tournament fishing hours.

Tuesday, August 18th — SCOC Headquarters

  • 5:00pm – 6:30pm — Mandatory Team Check In/Registration
  • 6:30pm — Captains Meeting

Wednesday, August 19th — San Diego, Seaforth Sportfishing

  • 5:00pm – 6:30pm — Mandatory Team Check In/Registration
  • 6:30pm — Captains Meeting

Friday, August 21st — Fishing Day 1

  • 12:00am — Departure permitted
  • 5:30am — Lines in
  • 5:00pm – 10:00pm — Weigh Stations Open

Saturday, August 22nd — Fishing Day 2

  • 6:00pm — Lines Out
  • 5:00pm – 9:00pm — Weigh Stations Open

Sunday, August 23rd — Dana Point Yacht Club

  • 11:00am — Polygraph Testing
  • 4:30pm – 6:30pm — Awards Ceremony + Dinner

Scoring & Payouts

Teams receive 1 point per pound of scored gamefish, rounded to the nearest tenth. Minimum qualifying weight is 15.0 lbs. After a 20% administration fee, 100% of the General Entry purse is allocated to the Heaviest Tuna division: 65% to 1st, 25% to 2nd, and 10% to 3rd. Optional jackpots pay out at 80% net.
